WHO’s Frightening Report Came Out, Every Eighth Person In The World Is A Victim Of Depression

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), currently every eighth person in the world is suffering from some form of mental disorder. According to statistics, around one billion people worldwide suffer from some form of mental disorder.

One of the seven victims is a teenager. There has also been a big increase in the number of mentally unwell people after the corona epidemic.

According to the National Mental Health Program (NMHP) data, 6-7 percent of India’s population is directly or indirectly facing mental disorders. After the corona epidemic, the number of mentally ill people in the country has increased rapidly.

Low awareness about mental health in India is the main reason for this problem. According to the Lancet Mental Health report released in the year 2018, 80 percent of mental patients in India do not get treatment at all.

Countries spend less on mental health

According to the WHO, the health of the world was already not good on the issue of mental health, but in the first year of the Corona epidemic, this situation got worse.

People’s rates of common conditions such as depression and anxiety increased by more than 25 percent.

On average, countries spend less than 2 percent of their health care budget on mental health, according to the report. As a result, only a small fraction of those in need have access to effective, affordable and quality mental health care.

People are committing suicide due to diseases

According to WHO estimates last year, suicide has become one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Every year, more people die as a result of suicide than from HIV, malaria or breast cancer or war and murder. In 2019 alone, more than seven lakh people died by suicide.

That is, suicide is the cause of one out of every 100 deaths. This number has increased in the last two years amid worsening mental health conditions.

What do psychology experts say
The World Health Organization report released in the year 2019 said that India would suffer an economic loss of $1.03 trillion due to poor mental health conditions between 2012 and 2030.

If this is not taken care of, it can cause huge damage to the economy in the coming decades. Professor Dr. Rakesh Pandey, Department of Psychology, Banaras Hindu University, there is a great lack of awareness among the common people about mental illness in India. It is seen as a social stigma.

This is the reason why there is a feeling of shame and hesitation in going to a psychiatrist for treatment, which complicates the problems. If the disorder is recognized in time and treatment is started, then to a large extent, better results are obtained.
