Maharashtra Chief Minister and Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray has called an urgent meeting on Tuesday after his party leader and state Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde and more than 10 MLAs were not contacted since the Legislative Council elections on Monday. . 

The development comes amid allegations of cross-voting by some Shiv Sena MLAs in the Legislative Council elections. The phones of Eknath Shinde and the MLAs are also being said to be ‘not reachable’. 

The effect of this move of Eknath Shinde is that many ministers including state Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil have canceled their programs and are reaching the capital Mumbai. Let us know who is Eknath Shinde who has gone missing along with 10 MLAs. 

Who is Eknath Shinde?

Eknath Shinde is a cabinet minister in the Uddhav Thackeray government, he holds the urban development ministry. He is also the party’s MLA from Kopri-Pakpakhadi assembly seat which comes under Thane district. 

Eknath Shinde reached the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly after winning the elections four times. 

In the years 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2019, he has won the assembly elections. Eknath Shinde was heavily influenced by Bal Thackeray, the founder of Shiv Sena. 

After the 2014 assembly elections, when Shiv Sena decided to sit in the opposition, Eknath Khadse was made the leader of the opposition. After a month, Shiv Sena decided to form the government with the support of Congress and NCP.

‘Missing’ MLA Shinde is in Gujarat’s Surat

The sudden disappearance of Shiv Sena MLAs from Mumbai is believed to be the ongoing political turmoil in Maharashtra over cross-voting in favor of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Assembly. 

The ‘missing’ Shiv Sena MLA is believed to be with Shinde in Gujarat’s Surat, a BJP-ruled state. Sources said Shinde is likely to address the media in Surat at around 2 pm today. The BJP won five seats in the MLC election, with the Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party getting two seats each. 

At the same time, despite the low numbers, the BJP was successful in getting a big victory in the elections. The BJP has 106 MLAs in the Maharashtra Assembly, while the remaining votes for their candidates have either come from independents, or from smaller parties or other parties. Mr Thackeray has called a necessary meeting of all party MLAs this afternoon. 

Shah meets Nadda amid political turmoil in Maharashtra 

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday met Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President JP Nadda, amid fresh stir in Maharashtra politics over the alleged displeasure of senior Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde. 

According to information received from sources, this meeting of both the leaders took place at Nadda’s residence. The meeting of the two leaders comes at a time when reports emerged that Shinde, a minister in the Maharashtra government, is not in Mumbai but is camping with some MLAs at a hotel in Gujarat’s Surat city.

Later Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut told reporters in Mumbai that it was true that some MLAs could not be contacted on Monday night after the Legislative Council elections, but the party has now managed to reach out to some of them. He said, “Eknath Shinde is not in Mumbai, but has been in touch with him.” 

Maharashtra got this second blow from BJP

After the Rajya Sabha elections, the ruling coalition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in Maharashtra got the second major setback from the BJP in Maharashtra. The MVA comprises the Shiv Sena, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Congress. 

Earlier on Tuesday, a Shiv Sena leader in Mumbai said that the state minister and senior Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde could not be contacted. He said Shinde may be in Gujarat with some MLAs. 

The leader did not reveal the number and details of the MLAs who could be with Shinde. Shinde has influence in some suburbs of Mumbai. “He (Shinde) was at the Shiv Sena office in the assembly complex on Monday when Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray was present there. 

But after that no one knows about him. He was not present during the counting of votes (for the Legislative Council elections).
